2019 was a great year for British tech start ups!

2019 saw a 44% rise in Venture Capital funding for UK tech startups which totalled £10.1bn by the end of the year. The figure makes up a third of the £30.4bn funding for European businesses in 2019 and puts Britain at the top of global growth. Fintech remained the top-performing tech startup sector, more than doubling its 2018 total to reach $5.4bn in 2019.

With eight unicorns created in London alone last year, the total puts the capital city as one of the top cities in the world for VC investment, alongside San Francisco, Beijing and New York. Last year also saw the largest round in UK history with Greensill raising $800m from Softbank.

Also raising a mega-round was Cambridge based company CMR Surgical announced the completion of the largest ever financing of a private European devices start-up, raising £200m and confirming CMR as Cambridge’s latest unicorn business.

The UK tech scene is thriving and we look forward to watching its continued growth in 2020!
